You should already know that tire care is important. Neglect the health of your tires and you could suffer anything from higher fuel consumption to reduced safety. You might already know how often your tires need to be changed and what to do when the pressure needs attention, but now it’s time to learn how to do a tire rotation and just why that’s such an important job.

With that in mind, read on for everything you need to know with our service experts today!

What is Tire Rotation?

Tire rotation is simple enough to understand. It simply involves moving each tire to a different wheel. Do that frequently and you’ll ensure your tires wear down evenly, which should lead to:

  • Strong Fuel Economy
  • Added Traction
  • Less Noise and Vibration
  • Increased Tire Life

So, when should you have your tires rotated? It depends on your make and model, but you’re generally looking at:

  • Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles for rear-wheel drive vehicles.
  • Every 3,000 to 5,000 miles for all-wheel drive vehicles.

You can check your owner’s manual for more specific recommendations.

How Should You Rotate Your Tires?

  • For FWD: Move the rear tires to the front and swap their sides, then move the front tires to the back, keeping them on the same side.
  • For FWD: Move the front tires to the rear and swap their sides, then move the back tires to the front, keeping them on the same side.

How to Rotate Tires at Home

  • Engage the parking brake.
  • Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels.
  • Lift one wheel with a jack and place the jack stand underneath.
  • Remove the tires, checking for optimal pressure as you do, and rotate them accordingly.
  • Place each tire on its new wheel mount and screw the lug nuts by hand as far as you can.
  • Lower the car from the jack stands and finish tightening with your lug wrench. Prevent brake rotor warping by working the lug nuts diagonally from one to another.
